Why sweat? Our skin is our largest organ and plays a vital role in detoxification. One of the six emunctories, or routes of elimination of the body, therapeutic sweating has been practiced for hundreds of years around the world. On a daily basis we are exposed to air pollution, pesticides/herbicides, heavy metals, plastics, toxins from our cosmetics, and the toxins produced by infections and molds. Mobilization and removal via sweat reduces total body burden of these toxins [1], which improves overall symptoms and disease states.

Why infrared? Infrared sauna is the technological advancement of traditional sauna. Despite being undetectable to the naked eye, the infrared light used in this particular type of sauna is able to penetrate the skin deeper, between 3-5 cm (about 1.5 inches) beneath the skin [2] compared to a traditional sauna. As a result, the heat creates a more vigorous sweat at a lower temperature. This allows for a more complete detoxification beyond just the blood stream. Many toxins are stored in fat cells, and thus are challenging to remove [3]. Subcutaneous fat, or fat located just below the skin surface, is the primary toxin laden site. Regular sweating (via exercise and/or sauna) aids in removal of these toxins through sweat, in addition to the body’s other elimination mechanisms [4].

In partnership with City Sweats, we have developed a program for our patients. We have developed special rates available only through our providers to give our patients with increased sensitivities the ability to sweat and detoxify safely in a truly healing and serene atmosphere.

Happy sweating!
